Gross vs. net work time
Your gross shift time is the total time between clock-in and clock-out. Net work time subtracts all unpaid breaks. If you work 9:00–17:00 (8 hours gross) with a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks, your net work time is 7 hours exactly.
Why this matters for payroll
Many employers only pay for net working hours. An 8-hour gross shift with an unpaid lunch is only 7.5 paid hours. Calculating this incorrectly leads to payroll disputes. This calculator prevents those errors.
The productivity ratio
The productivity percentage shows what fraction of your total shift is actual work. A typical ratio is 85–95%. If it's much lower, it may indicate too many breaks or an inefficiently structured shift.
