Why it matters: A common year is 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one. That leftover day is what pushes the weekday forward, and the leap year adds a second — so the pattern is irregular enough that guessing fails.
Reporting the age someone will turn as their current age.
Current age is one lower until the birthday actually arrives.
Why it matters: Someone turning 32 in November is 31 in August. Conflating the two is the same off-by-one that makes year subtraction unreliable, and it persists for up to eleven months of the year.

Why the weekday advances every year
A common year contains 365 days. Divided by seven that is 52 weeks and one day left over, so every date moves forward one weekday each year.
A leap year has 366 days — 52 weeks and two days — so dates after 29 February jump forward by two. Dates in January and February shift by only one that year, because the leap day has not yet occurred.
The combined pattern repeats every 28 years within a century, which is why a birthday tends to fall on the same weekday it did 28 years earlier.
The leap year rule in full
The complete rule has three parts, applied in order:
- A year divisible by 4 is a leap year
- …unless it is divisible by 100, when it is not
- …unless it is also divisible by 400, when it is
So 1996 and 2024 are leap years, 1900 was not, and 2000 was. The rule exists because Earth's orbital period is about 365.2422 days — close to 365.25 but not close enough to leave uncorrected over centuries.
